The Film: Sofie (Sharon Stone) is a right-wing reporter with a particular distain for issues regarding immigration. When her brother goes missing while serving as a relief worker in Mexico she’s forced to cross the border in hopes of bringing him home. Mexico proves to be far more dangerous than she ever could have imagined.
The Extras: None
Recommendation: “Border Run” wants to be taken seriously but feels more like a ‘70s exploitation flick than a modern political thriller as it emphasizes violence and action rather than directly examining the issue of illegal immigration. Sharon Stone, sporting black hair, does her best to bring a sense of tough dignity to her role, but her character, like the majority of the characters, isn’t written well enough to fairly judge her performance. The script also features numerous twists. Some work better than others, but none are really necessary. If you’re just looking for a B-grade thriller “Border Run” works just fine, but if you’re really interested in watching a film that mixes violence and politics more effectively I’d recommend tracking down Cary Fukunaga’s “Sin Nombre.”
