Movie Review: Evil Dead
3.5 out of 5 Stars
Director • Fede Alvarez
Starring • Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas
Rated • R
Recommended to • Old-school horror fans looking for a film with excessive amounts of wit and gore.
Mia (Jane Levy) is trying to straighten out her life so she, two childhood friends, her brother and her brother’s girlfriend escape to her family’s long neglected cabin in hopes of helping her kick her drug addiction. Unfortunately in their absence a group of backwoods locals used the cabin’s basement for a ritual cleansing and left behind a mysterious book with evil powers.
As a fan of the original films I was nervous about what “Evil Dead” might look like in the hands of someone other than Sam Raimi. Even when all the reviews coming out of SXSW were filled with glowing hyperbole I remained skeptical. Turns out that the hyperbole wasn’t an exaggeration. “Evil Dead” is about as awesome and astonishing as a gory horror film with a dark sense of humor could ever hope to be. It captures the spirit of the original film and forges its only path at the same time. I don’t see it appealing to non-horror fans in the way that “Cabin in the Woods” did, but if you’re a fan of the genre I highly recommend seeing “Evil Dead.”
