DVD Review: Not Fade Away
Street Date: April 30, 2013
Available On: Digital Download, DVD and Blu-ray
Synopsis: Set during the musical revolution of the 1960s Not Fade Away follows Douglas (John Magaro), a young man that drops out of college to pursue his dreams of being a successful musician.
Blu-ray Extras: Deleted Scenes and “Building the Band” and “The Basement Tapes” featurettes.
Recommendation: Not Fade Away is the debut feature film from David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos. It’s a beautiful looking film that is filled with nostalgia and the music of the 1960s and 1970s. It’s also rather shallow and uninviting. The music industry is filled with talented musicians that are incredibly charismatic despite being unbearably egotistical. Not Fade Away’s protagonist, Douglas, is egotistical without the benefit of being charismatic. As a result it’s unlikely that the film to appeal to anyone who doesn’t already have a love for the music of the era.
