Recommendation: Ever since watching Oblivion in theaters I’ve been contemplating the future of science fiction films. Is there anything original left to explore or are we simply bound to the traditional tropes? The horror genre, which I love nearly as much as science fiction, has become an even more cliché-ridden nightmare of remakes and knockoffs. So here we have Dark Skies, a film that pulls ideas from a variety of sources and presents a story that we’ve already seen numerous times before. To his credit writer/director Scott Stewart has at least made a watchable film with a decent script and above average performances. However, because there are very few unexpected twists those expecting a fast-paced thriller will be disappointed by the film’s less aggressive approach. Those that can manage the slow burning pace of the film will be rewarded with a fairly pleasing, albeit unnecessary, extraterrestrial creeper.
