Movie Review: Epic
3 out of 5 Stars
Director: Chris Wedge
Starring: Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried
Recommended To: Those looking for a beautiful, but fairly generic animated film with an environmental spin.
Synopsis: Mary Katherine, a young woman, goes to visit her estranged father, a scientist singularly focused on proving the existence of a miniscule race of warriors that live in the forest near his home. Ignored by her father, Mary Katherine wanders into the forest only to find herself shrunken and caught in the middle of a war between the Leafmen warriors and the evil Boggans.
Review: There’s no way around the fact that Epic feels like FernGully: The Last Rainforest made in a post-Avatar era. Its beautiful to look at, but ultimately it is a mediocre telling of a story we’re already very familiar with. Most of the blame falls on the script and its four screenwriters (all working loosely from William Joyce’s book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs) who seem to be pulling the story in four different directions. Epic is the sort of film that children will enjoy because they don’t recognize its flaws. Adults? They’ll have to simply be enchanted by the visuals because there isn’t much else here.
