Blu-ray Review: Hansel & Gretel Get Baked
Rated: Not Rated
Genre: Horror, Comedy
Street Date: June 25, 2013
Available On: DVD and Blu-ray
Synopsis: When Gretel’s boyfriend goes missing while trying to buy a potent strain of marijuana she and her brother Hansel trace his steps back to a mysterious old woman.
Recommendation: I was surprised that the narrative was more of a kooky blood soaked horror film than a story with the Grimm equivalent to a guest appearance from Jay and Silent Bob on Once Upon a Time. The pot jokes are still there, but the boring drone of two people sitting around adlibbing lines is limited to the opening sequence and a couple scenes towards the end of the film. It’s less Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle or Pineapple Express and more the story of Elizabeth Bathory merged with the darker elements of the original Brothers Grimm tale Hansel & Gretel.
Caught somewhere between a stoner comedy and a gory B-movie Hansel & Gretel Get Baked isn’t nearly as bad as I expected, but it isn’t nearly as good as it needs to be. It wants to be a midnight movie staple, but will have to settle for being a film that managed to stretch its shallow premise a whole lot further than it should have been able to do.
