Movie Review: Pacific Rim
4 out of 5 Stars
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Ibris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Adventure
Recommended To: Anyone looking for an excellent mashup of Godzilla and Transformers that transcends its genre roots by including far more than just bombastic action sequences.
Synopsis: When gargantuan monsters rose from a rift in the Pacific Ocean mankind countered the threat by building Jaegers, giant piloted robots. After a decade of repelled attacks these monstrous war machines fell from favor as politicians circled their wagons around the construction of a massive defense barrier; a barrier that proved to be easily penetrated. With the fate of the world in question the few remaining Jaegers and their pilots stand as humanity’s last line of defense.
Review: With Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter Travis Beacham have managed to take a classic B-movie premise and elevated it into one of the most enjoyable and surprisingly character driven action films of the past decade. It provides all the giant monster vs. massive robot mayhem that any 12-year-old boy could dream up and pairs it with a script filled with characters that you actually care about. In the process del Toro has managed to improve upon everything good Michael Bay did with the Transformer films while cutting out the garbage that made Bay’s movies a trial to sit through. The film also successfully taps into the spirit and mayhem of the early Japanese Kaiju (giant monster) films. There’s no point in waiting for the Godzilla reboot or Transformers 4; they aren’t going to be able to top Pacific Rim.
