New DVD and Blu-ray Releases for Jyly 16, 2013

(KUTV) This week sees the arrival of director Brian Helgeland’s Jackie Robinson film 42. The movie stars Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey and Chadwick Boseman as Robinson. To tie in with 42’s release Major League Baseball Productions is releasing the documentary Letters from Jackie: The Private Thoughts of Jackie Robinson. Paired together these two films offer a glimpse into the struggles and triumphs of a true American icon.
On the opposite side of the scale, this week also sees the release of Fede Alvarez’s enjoyable Evil Dead remake/reboot/sequel to Sam Raimi’s cult classic film series, James Purefoy in the dark fantasy film Solomon Kane, Sylvester Stallone in the action thriller Bullet to the Head, Aaron Eckhart and Olga Kurylenko in the action thriller Erased.
It’s a busy week for television releases with the fifth and final season of the Glenn Close starring legal drama Damages, the second season of AMC’s historical western Hell on Wheels, the first season of the BBC’s excellent new sci-fi drama Orphan Black, the first two seasons of the Cartoon Networks Regular Show, the second season of Syfy’s Alphas, the second season of Cinemax After Dark’s pulpy series Femme Fatales and the third season of the BBC’s superhero drama Misfits.
The BBC is celebrating the 50th anniversary of their seminal series Doctor Who with a bevy of special releases. This week features Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited, the first in a series of DVDs that pay tribute to the various actors that have played the Doctor over the years. This set covers the first four Doctors played by William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.
This week sees the release of the Sylvia Caminer’s acclaimed Rick Springfield documentary An Affair of the Heart as well as a pair of classic cartoon releases from Warner Bros. The Smurfs: Smurfs to the Rescue!, a six-episode collection, and Tom and Jerry: No Mice Allowed, which collects 30 episodes from across the various Tom and Jerry series released between 1943 and 2007.
