Synopsis: Despite having recently lost their jobs a close group of friends decide to continue their weekly tradition of pooling their money on the same lotto numbers they have picked for decades.
Recommendation: Working from a script co-written by Party of Five creator Christopher Keyser, first-time filmmaker Andrew Meieran’s Highland Park is a mixed bag. The cast, which features Billy Burk, Danny Glover, Parker Posey and numerous recognizable faces, is generally good, but the story is light weight and it telegraphs its ending in such a way that it robs the narrative of its fun. Posey’s performance as the city’s mayor is a bit too campy and over the top (as if she’s channeling a character from a Christopher Guest film) and doesn’t match the tone of the other performances. Her character has clearly been written to give the story a hefty bit of social commentary, but it feels forced and doesn’t mesh with the rest of the film.
