Movie Review: The Mortal Instruments - City of Bones
2 out of 5 Stars
Director: Harald Zwart
Starring: Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
Recommended To: Teens that don’t mind an uneven movie that is an unimpressive hodgepodge of other films.
Synopsis: Clary (Lily Collins) is about to learn that she is a descendent of an old order of hunters assigned to protect the world from demons and other evils that go bump in the night. When her mother goes missing Clary is forced to team with mysterious strangers in hopes of rescuing her from a fellow hunter that has gone astray.
Review: For the first third of City of Bones I was intrigued by where the film might go as it tied pieces of Twilight to Harry Potter and Star Wars together in a dark tapestry. Then a cheesy romantic scene in garden (complete with a ballad and sprinklers) came along and completely derailed the film. From that point forward it was clich after clich tied together by terrible dialogue and misguided performances.
I haven’t read Cassandra Clare’s novels. I don’t know if first-time screenwriter Jessica Postigo’s script reflects weaknesses found within the books. I do know that Postigo’s script is a mess that is made all the more incomprehensible by director Harald Zwart’s inability to get his actors to do anything more than look like they’re posing for fashion advertisements. There is little to no connection or chemistry between anyone and the characters’ actions rarely feel motivated. If it weren’t bound together by the script I suspect that the characters would simply abandon the plot and go in separate directions.
