Movie Review: Insidious - Chapter 2
2.5 out of 5 Stars
Director: James Wan
Starring: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey
Recommended To: Fans of horror films that don't rely on gore to get under the skin.
Synopsis: Believing they've escaped the grasp of the evil presence Jack and his family move in with his mother in his childhood home only to discover that their nightmare was just beginning.
Review: James Wan has established himself as one of the better horror directors of this age. He, for better or worse, launched the torture porn subgenre with Saw and then went on to make Insidious and The Conjuring, two wonderful horror films that eschewed gore almost altogether. Sadly Wan insists Insidious: Chapter 2 will be the last horror film he makes as he next takes up the reigns of the Fast & the Furious series.
Insidious: Chapter 2 picks up where the previous film left off and fills in a few gaps in the original narrative (occasionally unnecessarily so). Its tone is a bit more campy than I recall the original being and the films inability to keep a constant tone proves to be the difference between making a decent film and crafting a horror movie that stands the test of time. Insidious: Chapter 2 goes for too many laughs that undercut the tension. Maybe some audiences want a chance to catch their breath; I prefer to be pushed to the edge without an escape route or release valve to ease the suspense.
