Movie Review: Gravity
4.5 out of 5 Stars
Director: Alfonso Cuaron
Starring: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney
Genre: Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Recommended To: Anyone looking for a white-knuckle thriller that is destined to be more than just one of the best films of 2013.
Synopsis: A medical engineer (Sandra Bullock) and an astronaut (George Clooney) are stranded in outer space when debris destroys their space shuttle.
Review: I trust director/writer Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Children of Men). In his brief career hes been able to craft some incredible and diverse films. So when the initial trailers for Gravity surfaced I immediately took notice. The concept was simple: Sandra Bullock and George Clooney adrift in space with limited options and a quickly diminishing oxygen supply. Would that idea be enough of a plot to sustain a 90-minute film? Did the trailer, and the extended versions that followed, reveal too much?
Rest assured, Gravity has more than its share of tension and surprises. It also features some of the most beautiful cinematography and special effects work that you'll ever see. Cauron's use of 3D is amazing and the sound design is hauntingly brilliant. The performances are noteworthy as George Clooney pours on the effortless charm and swagger hes known for and Sandra Bullock continues to surprise with what is one of her finest performances to date.
Gravity is a truly immersive cinematic experience that is a sure lock to rack up numerous Oscar nominations in nearly every available category.
