New Release DVD and Blu-ray for January 28, 2014
(KUTV) It’s a heavy release week with PBS period drama Masterpiece: Downton Abbey Season 4, Ron Howard’s underappreciated Formula One film Rush starring Chris Hemsworth (Thor: The Dark World), the animated sequel Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline in Last Vegas, Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate and the hugely successful (and Oscar nominated) Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa starring Johnny Knoxville.
Those looking to get an early jump on their Valentine’s Day shopping will want to consider the Nicholas Sparks: Limited Edition Collection which includes Safe Haven, The Lucky One, Dear John, Nights in Rodanthe, The Notebook, A Walk to Remember and Message in a Bottle.
Television fans have the the fourth and final season of HBO’s celebrated post-Hurricane Katrina drama Treme (a complete collection that includes all four seasons is also released this week) and the A&E two-part film Bonnie & Clyde starring Emile Hirsch and Holliday Grainger as infamous crime duo.
Those looking for something a little more on the dark side have Kino Classic’s Blu-ray release of 1920’s Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Antisocial, a horror film about five university students barricaded inside a house while a virus causes havoc on the outside world, the supernatural thriller Dark Touch and the utterly campy and ridiculous Argento’s Dracula from the once-great director Dario Argento (Suspira, Deep Red).
This week the BBC releases two cuddly-cold-weather documentaries Penguins: Spy in the Huddle and the polar bear focused Snow Babies.
This week also sees the Criterion Collection’s release of Terence Davies’ The Long Day Closes, the British filmmaker’s celebrated film about an 11-year-old boy who finds solace in cinema.
