(KUTV) What can your DNA do besides just define you? It can help save you.
David Loughmiller, Lab Manager for Intermountain Precision Genomics explains how Intermountain Precision Genomics extends life and improving quality of life for stage four cancer patients.
At Intermountain Precision Genomics lab we isolate the DNA from the cancer tumor, the specimen is then analyzed by a sequencer and the results interpreted to determine the specific defects found in the tumor. These genetic mutations can then be matched in about 80 percent of cases with a known medication to target the cancer. Side effects are generally much less than chemotherapy and our research shows patients are living significantly longer lives with improved quality of life.
