Utah is in the middle of an opioid epidemic. Opioid use in pregnancy increases the risk for multiple adverse outcomes including maternal death and neonatal abstinence syndrome. However, there are a lot of misconceptions about pregnant women who take opioids, the safety of different kinds of opioids and treatment options available for pregnant women.

Dr. Marcela Smid and Jasmin Charles, PA from the University of Utah stopped by KUTV to inform viewers about the dangers of opioid use in pregnancy, treatment options for women with opioid use disorders, and naloxone availability to prevent overuse among pregnant and postpartum women and their children.
