Healthy Family Meals Month Declaration September 2017

(KUTV) Since September 2014, Governor Herbert has declared September to be Healthy Family Meals Month in Utah. Rebecca Fronberg with the Utah Department of Health stopped by KUTV to explain how bringing the family together for regular meals has a protective effect in a variety of ways. Children who are engaged with their parents through family meals are more likely to:

  • Limit their use of harmful or illegal substances
  • Achieve greater success in school
  • Develop a high self-esteem
  • Experience fewer mental and behavioral issues including fewer thoughts of suicide
  • Lower obesity rates
  • Improved communication skills
  • Build stronger ties with their families
  • Develop healthier eating and lifestyle habits

State and local health departments encourage families to take time to eat and socialize together around the dinner table at least once a week, enjoying one another’s company, strengthening relationships, and eating nutritious foods.
