(KUTV) Dan Clark is not just an inspirational speaker, but is an author as well.
He was also involved in the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series from day one and told Shauna Lake how it all came to be.
Clark's third book was called "One Minute Messages."
"I took 250 of my stories and edited each one down to 24 lines," he explained.
He sold 170,000 of that book, without ever being in a bookstore.
The men behind the "Chicken Soup" series, Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield, called Clark to figure out how he marketed his book.
Clark explained to them how they should make it a gift book and use it as a way to send inspirational messages to others.
"It became more than a Hallmark card. It became a vicarious way of communicating at a deeper level," he said.
The men took the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" book to many publishers, most of which turned them down.
But eventually one publisher said yes and it became a huge success.
Clark has written 34 books and is a New York Times best-selling author.
His latest book is called "The Art of Significance: Achieving the Level Beyond Success" which he describes as "a reminder that we become the average of the five people we associate with the most."
