(KUTV) Gail Halvorsen dropped food and supplies in West Berlin as part of the Berlin Airlift after the second World War.

He described the conditions in Germany to Shauna Lake.

According to Halvorsen, Germany was cut into two pieces--east and west.

Berlin itself was cut into four pieces and divided between Britain, France, America and Russia.

There were stark differences between places there were "free" and not.

"You'd walk from one street to the other and say, 'Wow, what happened?'" he said. "The people were just in a real quandary."
