(KUTV) Mike Petke was an MLS player before he began coaching.
It's given him a little bit of an advantage as a coach, even though he calls it a "delicate balance."
"I think I understand the mentality because I was in that situation. Every situation these players are in, I've gone through," Petke said.
Petke was on the forefront of MLS when it first formed.
"It was unbelievable, thrilling. It was exciting," he said of playing in the league.
He recalls when it first started, teams were staying in budget motels and would even practice on baseball fields.
"Now we're staying at five-star hotels, have 80-million dollars practice facilities. For a lot of these teams, it's come a long way," he said.
