Dr. John Ryan: How cardio helps our hearts

(KUTV) Did you know that February 18th is the day that most New Year's resolutions die?

Dr. John Ryan is a cardiologist for University of Utah Healthcare and he joined to talk about how cardio helps our hearts.

How much cardio is the right amount?
- Aim for a minimum of 60 minutes of exercise 5 times a week.
- Get ACTIVE! You don't have to start running marathons, just get out and go for a walk with your loved ones.

How do you keep going?
- Tell a friend your fitness goals
- Have a gym buddy - it's easier to commit when someone is there to support you
-Challenge yourself and a friend to a race

Is it true that sitting is the new smoking?
- Frequent sitters have a greater risk of developing heart disease

Men and women who sat more than six hours a day died earlier than their counterparts, who limited sitting time to three hours a day or less.
