(KUTV) - Research shows that breast milk has important nutrients for newborn babies. Breast milk is also valuable for premature or sick infants. However, there are times when new moms canât produce breast milk. When this happens, donor milk can be used. Weâve told you about the need for donors here in the state. Now, there is a new donor milk depot in Southern Utah. In September, a depot opened at the Women and Childrenâs Center at Dixie Regional Medical Cente
r. "What they have found is by having local depots in the NICU’s around the United States, they increase the volume of milk that is donated."
Kerryann Humphrey is a lactation specialist. She says healthy, nursing women can donate breast milk. The milk is then sent to a milk bank in Denver to be distributed to depots across the country. "We have a couple of great donors. Some moms who have had an overabundance of milk. We even use milk from women who have lost infants."
