Inside The Story: Custom Hats with a History
(KUTV) There is a one of a kind custom hat business in Salt Lake that has some serious roots dating back 160 years.
Along Redwood Road at about 2300 South there's a business that dates back to Brigham Young's era. JW Hats is a one of a kind business that creates hundreds of custom made hats each year in all shapes and sizes.
The owner and operator is JW, 79, says the business got its start in 1853 in Salt Lake when Brigham Young helped Charles Tatton start a hat business. That business would survive until the 1980's when it went bankrupt. JW said, "If it hadn't had been for a three year period when the company was in bankruptcy this would be the oldest operating business in the state of Utah."
JW eventually came along and got it out of bankruptcy. Given its history, some of the equipment JW uses may have been used to make hats for Brigham Young.
JW says he makes about 1500 to 2000 hats a year for people from all over the world; prices range anywhere from $200 to $2500 depending on the order. He also cleans, blocks and renovates hats of all types.
