Web Exclusive: Stories Into Movies
Richard Paul Evans tells Shauna Lake what it's like when his stories are turned into movies.
SHAUNA LAKE: What is it like when you see your story made into a movie? Did you like it? Did you feel like the characters were the ones you’d dreamed up in your head, or was it a little bit hard to watch?
RICHARD PAUL EVANS: Both. Four of them have been made into movies. Some are more similar to the books than others. The first one was changed a lot. I wasn’t real happy with it. TV Guide let it be known and yelled at the producer. I was excited to have it made. It was a thrill. It was really cool. It was like wow, that’s Maureen O’Hara and Richard Thomas. So it was just exciting, but I would have changed the casting. I would have changed a lot of it. At the time the book wasn’t so big. So they were talking about changing the name of the book. They were talking about changing the story. Which was a huge mistake.
