Web Exclusive: Utah's Progress
Shauna Lake: How do you think Utah is doing right now as a state; financially, politically and otherwise, with growth and expansion?
Olene Walker: I think they're doing very well. You know I’m concerned about education. We have a lot of students and so it maybe can be excused but basically in the past we've put that as the number one priority I’m afraid that it's slipped from that position. And quite frankly the best way to determine the commitment of a state to education is to get the percentage of income from private personal resources going to education. Traditionally back in the 60s 70s 80s, we were always in the top 10, often number 3 or 4 in the amount of money that we put into education. Do you have any idea where we are today? We've slipped to 28th so despite that we have all these students we put below the average of personal income into education. That concerns me a great deal. And it translate as you said, we are at the very bottom. We are not only at the bottom we're around, slightly over a $1,000 below any other state in what we spend on students. I'd like to see that changed. I'd like to see our first priority still be the education of students and I worked in that direction and will continue to work in that direction; because it's so important. How we educate our children is what we will look like in the future.
