Web Exclusive: Cartoon Festival Cow
SHAUNA LAKE: Tell us about your beautiful cow you brought today.
PAT BAGLEY: Okay.
SHAUNA LAKE: The cartoon awards in France. Is that correct?
PAT BAGLEY: Yes I went to a cartoon festival in France. It was just outside of Limoge. And Limoge is famous for its ceramics, and it’s also famous for its cows, which they call limousine cows. And they have this cartoon festival just outside of Limoge in a place called Saint-Just. And they invite all the cartoonists from all over the world.
SHAUNA LAKE: What was that like?
PAT BAGLEY: It was just an amazing experience.
SHAUNA LAKE: It was just like, “There’s more of me!” You have such a unique way of thinking.
PAT BAGLEY: Yes exactly. And even though we couldn’t always communicate through the language, we would draw the cartoons and would always manage to communicate.
SHAUNA LAKE: And so what’s with the cow?
PAT BAGLEY: So every year at Saint-Just they award a cow to somebody. You know to some cartoonist who has done something good, extraordinary, or remarkable. So I was there for three days, and I was there with three other American cartoonists. You know these are all great cartoonists, great people, Daryl Cagle was the one who invited us, and he was the American cartoonist who was kind of our host when we were there. Cagle first went a couple years before, but before that no American cartoonists had come. So we went as kind of the American team you know like to the Olympics. And so we were there for three days and like I said just an amazing experience, you know just wonderful. And at the end of it, they award a cow to a cartoonist. And so they bring everybody into the hall and everybody’s sitting there and then they make the award in French, and I realize half way through, oh they’re giving the cow to us. And they actually bring in a live cow and they award the cow and they take pictures with us and it’s like
one of those movies where you see all the flashes going off and all the cameras. It was just really intense. And we make front page news in the local newspaper.
SHAUNA LAKE: That’s incredible. So your cow is like an Oscar. It’s the equivalent. It’s something major, major in the world of cartooning.
PAT BAGLEY: Yes. They don’t give me the actual cow even though there were some people in the 1960’s when they give them the actual cow and they took the cow back to Paris and took it up the Eiffel Tower.
SHAUNA LAKE: Perfect.
PAT BAGLEY: Oh yeah.
SHAUNA LAKE: And you didn’t really want to ship it back to Salt Lake City, did you?
PAT BAGLEY: No.
SHAUNA LAKE: No I don’t think so.
PAT BAGLEY: It was a nice cow.
SHAUNA LAKE: That’s so cool. So one of the highlights of your career you’d say?
PAT BAGLEY: Absolutely, yep.
SHAUNA LAKE: The highlight of your career?
PAT BAGLEY: Yeah I think it’s right up there. There are a few things up there, the Herblock Award, we talked about that earlier. That’s one of them. This is definitely right up there. One of the cartoonists I went with, Steve, has won the Pulitzer. He won the Pulitzer last year and after all this he goes, “You know this is better.”
SHAUNA LAKE: Probably because it was a little more interesting and a little more fun too.
PAT BAGLEY: Oh it was a lot of fun.
