Governor Herbert describes the out of state perception of Utah and defines the state in his terms.
Shauna Lake: When you go out of state, which you often do, or out of the country, how do you describe Utah or how do you define it to someone who's never been here? Or doesn't know very much about it?
Governor Herbert: Well, for a lot of people there is a lot of ignorance. Kind of our coming out party was the 2002 Winter Olympics, when we hosted the world and they got to see us and probably saw us in a new light, an enlightened perception. The sophistication of Utah is sometimes lost on people outside of the west or the intermountain west. They don't recognize some of the culture we have, whether it's our ballet, our orchestra-symphony, the great arts we have here. We have people who come to Utah to buy art because it's the best art for the lowest cost. So we're being discovered in many ways. Our educational achievement. Our great universities. We have many businesses that come here to recruit, have done that for years. Now they're coming here to recruit, but staying here to build their businesses. So kind of a remarkable sea change has taken place. Because of all the national accolades from people outside of Utah, it's caused people to kind of turn their head and say what's going on in Utah? Why are they the best place for business by Forbes magazine? Why are they the best quality of life by different corporate relocation magazines? Why does the U.S. Chamber of Commerce say they're the number one boom state in America? Why are they getting more efficiency out of their state government than other governments? So not only best managed, but leading on many cutting edge issues. Whether it be immigration, energy development our ten year energy plan. A lot of areas we have received national recognition. So it's not a hard sell. I'm the chief advocate for Utah and I take every opportunity to advocate for our great state, the people here. But we're being recognized and noticed. So when I get out, people say hey, tell us a little about Utah. We would like to find out why you're successful. And we would like to emulate or copy you, and why not? You should copy from the best.
