Person 2 Person: Nicole Roundy
She was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer at the age of eight. Then, while undergoing chemotherapy treatments, Nicole Roundy had to make a life changing decision; a decision that resulted in an above-knee amputation of her right leg. However despite the struggles, this cancer survivor was not going to let anything slow her down. Nicole is now a Paralympic snowboarder who competed at the 2014 Sochi Paralympic Winter Games. She says her goal is to make it back to the Paralympics in 2018. This week Shauna Lake sits down with Nicole Roundy, Person 2 Person.

Below is a transcript of Shauna Lakeas interview with Nicole Roundy:

SHAUNA LAKE: Tell me a little bit about what it was like to compete at the Olympics.

NICOLE ROUNDY: You know itas probably one thing for someone who was raised with that dream. They grew up with that dream, they worked towards it, and for me it wasa|I never in a million years imagined that I would have the opportunity to represent the United States.

SHAUNA LAKE: And when you say this was not a dream of yours, is it something that came kind of by happenstance?

NICOLE ROUNDY: I think it came later. I didnat start snowboarding until I was 18 so the thought of being a child and thinking I was going to snowboard in the Paralympics? No. I would have laughed at you if thatas what you would have told me I would do when I grew up.

SHAUNA LAKE: It was really meaningful for you I can tell.

NICOLE ROUNDY: I mean it was, absolutely. I mean as an eight year old child, aWeare going to cut your leg off.a And that changed your entire future, and the outlook on your life, your perspective, everything.

SHAUNA LAKE: Tell me abouta|you mentioned about your leg being amputated. You were only eight years old. Tell me a little bit about that.

NICOLE ROUNDY: I had a pretty normal childhood and when I was eight my mother noticed a lump on the outside of my knee. We went to a doctor, another doctor, and then Primary Childrenas Medical Center diagnosed me with Osteogenic Sarcoma which is a type of bone cancer, and I started chemotherapy treatments. At eight years old you justa|you take things as they come to you. You donat really second guess them very much. But in October I had to make a decision of how they would amputate my leg. If they were just going to take it right off, if they were just going to do some kind of variation surgery, and I remember sitting on my bed, my mother was standing in the doorway, and she just said, aI canat make this decision for you.a She made every decision up to that point and then she realized that this was my life, and I had to start deciding what I wanted out of it.

SHAUNA LAKE:  Were you scared? Eight years old.

NICOLE ROUNDY: Of course I was scared.

SHAUNA LAKE: Eight years old. I mean kids that age arenat making those kinds of decisions and dealing with those kinds of issues.

NICOLE ROUNDY: Not normally. But it was a turning point in my life, maybe it was earlier than most people, but I did realize that every decision I made, I had to understand what the consequences of that would be and be willing to live with it.

SHAUNA LAKE: And I read when I was doing some research about you, that you liked athletics. You wanted to be on teams and you wanted to compete, and you, just because of your prosthetic, you couldnat quite keep up. What did that feel like?

NICOLE ROUNDY: I tried out for the volleyball team and the basketball team and there was a sense of respect for the fact that I tried. I got out there, and I did the best that I could. I could never keep up with other people on the court. I wanted to find something that I was good at.

SHAUNA LAKE: So then how does the concept of snowboarding come to you?

NICOLE ROUNDY: I saw snowboarding and Iam like, aI want to try that.a The technology wasnat there yet. I guess maybe I was a little ahead of my time. I had to wait for two years before someone said, aOkay. Letas try it. Letas see what happens.a

SHAUNA LAKE: So the first time youare on a snowboard, with your prosthetic, what does that feel like?

NICOLE ROUNDY: Painful. I fell a lot. But I would pick myself back up, I would fall again. And every time I fell, I remember laughing and when I came off the snow, I was covered in bruises. But I kept going. I think it was just knowing that nobody else had really accomplished very much in the sport that really drove me to keep trying.

SHAUNA LAKE: So whatas next for you Nicole? Are you going to compete again?

NICOLE ROUNDY: I hope so. I would really like another chance in 2018. As amazing as it was to go, I was slightly disappointed in my overall performance in Sochi and I really want to see what Iam capable of as an athlete.

SHAUNA LAKE: And I keep thinking of that little eight year old girl with her mom standing in the doorway and if she could have looked into her life here. What would you tell that little girl?

NICOLE ROUNDY: I think to keep your chin up and be strong. Thereas always going to be times in your life when you just need a hug, a pat on the back, and someone to tell you everythingas going to be okay.

SHAUNA LAKE: And you are that person for so many other people right now. I hope you know that.

SHAUNA LAKE: Itas been so nice to get to know you better Person 2 Person Nicole.

SHAUNA LAKE: That you so much. I appreciate your time.
