Web Exclusive: How She Got Involved
Shauna Lake asks Pamela Atkinson how she got involved with helping those less fortunate.
: What led you on this path?
PAMELA ATKINSON: Sometimes it’s hard to remember how I got involved, but I do remember once in Seattle. They were doing a PSA on the radio and asking people to give up some time on Christmas Day to come and serve dinner for homeless people. My family and I decided to go down and celebrate Christmas later in the day. It was a unique experience, Shauna, because people express their appreciation, and I had never quite thought of homeless people expressing gratitude in the way they were doing. It made me start thinking about people living in poverty, and since I had grown up in poverty, I knew something of what it was like. That made a lasting impression on me and soon after I came to Utah I got involved with serving dinner at the Salvation Army.
