Web Exclusive: A World of Women
Shauna Lake asks Ballet West's artistic director Adam Sklute about being a boy in ballet and whether he has felt discriminated against.
SHAUNA LAKE: Did you feel discriminated against being a boy and doing ballet?
ADAM SKLUTE: Sometimes. In some places, yeah. It was hard but really not so much. Really not so much, and nowadays, the world is changing so much. Dance is becoming really popular on television with Dancing With The Stars and So You Think You Can Dance? and all of these shows. And Breaking Pointe I’d like to think, that we’re really showing that this is something that everyone can do. Now when we look into our own school, our ballet school, we have so many young men in the Ballet West Academy. This is great because this means that a little boy that wants to dance or his parents are sending him to dance class, he’s not going to be alone. He’s got plenty of little boys to paddle around with and to realize that he’s not alone out there.
