Web Exclusive: When He Started Dancing
Adam Sklute talks about when he started dancing.
ADAM SKLUTE: I was seventeen, I had a girlfriend in high school who said oh you know, you should start dancing. She was a ballerina. You’ve got good proportions for it, and I was like oh I don’t want to start dancing, but she said no go do it. I did it and it was exactly like you said, it was awakening. Boom. Everything came together for me. I started dancing and I never looked back, and at the age of seventeen and a half, after dancing for six months, I told my parents that I was going to be a professional dancer. They looked at me and said no you’re not. Now it wasn’t that they had a problem with ballet, they had taken me to see ballet as a kid. It was that they just didn’t think it was a reasonable expectation for me at seventeen and a half after dancing for six months to become a professional. But that was precisely the kind of challenge I needed and I took it up full time and six months later I moved to New York and I was a professional dancer a year and a half later.
