Real Salt Lake is currently one of the top teams in major league soccer, and a big part of that is thanks to one of the program's most recognizable faces.
In this week's "Person 2 Person,” Shauna Lake sits down with RSL midfielder and team captain, Kyle Beckerman.
Below is a transcript of Shauna Lake’s “Person 2 Person” interview with Kyle Beckerman:
SHAUNA LAKE: What is it like to get out there on a field and have those people, those fans who are crazy for you guys up there? It much feel kind of like, I mean you’re a family in some ways.
KYLE BECKERMAN: It does. It really does. We know they’re pulling for us. They feel the goals that we get scored on and they can’t do anything about it. They’re kind of living through us in a way on the field. So it’s almost harder because we’re just in the moment and we can’t really think too much about it, but the fans are sitting there waiting and they’re watching and it’s just, I think it’s just so intense being in the stands. Because I’ve seen it both ways, and when you can’t do anything about it but cheer and just watch it’s tough. So it is our family, and we want to make them happy. We want to send them home in their cars, saying what a great game that was and finish their night off with a smile.
SHAUNA LAKE: Tell me about the hair. What’s behind it?
KYLE BECKERMAN: Well I’ve always loved them. I mean, I think, I guess the first time I saw them was probably on a Bob Marley CD, and when I used to see them around Maryland it’s fairly popular I think. There’s people from all walks of the earth in that area and so I always enjoyed them. I always liked when I saw them. When I was younger I have really curly hair and a couple I would just get, just by not combing it. And then my mom would say, ‘you get upstairs and you get that out, you get that out of your hair.’ Then as I got older, your mom’s not there anymore and so you can just continue to grow them.
SHAUNA LAKE: Why do you seem so happy about that? Your mom was out of the picture and you got to grow your dreads.
KYLE BECKERMAN: That was the only way I could. That’s the only way. If we were still living together, if I was still at home, I wouldn’t be able to have them.
SHAUNA LAKE: So this is a trademark of yours? You would never cut them at this point?
KYLE BECKERMAN: I don’t know. You never know.
SHAUNA LAKE: A lot of people say you’re solely responsible almost for the female fan base?
KYLE BECKERMAN: I don’t think so.
SHAUNA LAKE: For Real female soccer fans?
KYLE BECKERMAN: No I don’t agree with that.
SHAUNA LAKE: Care to respond?
KYLE BECKERMAN: I just, I don’t know where you heard that.
SHAUNA LAKE: I think you’re blushing, is that possible?
KYLE BECKERMAN: I don’t know, I don’t know. We have awesome fans though.
SHAUNA LAKE: So you recently got engaged?
KYLE BECKERMAN: I did.
SHAUNA LAKE: So you’re life’s changing a little bit in that realm, not single, not dating. Tell me a little bit about that situation.
KYLE BECKERMAN: It has been awesome. I’ve found a woman, a best friend, someone I enjoy spending all the free time I get. She’s my biggest fan, and it’s great to take this next step towards being in a family. It’s been an awesome ride and it’s what I’m really looking forward to, taking that next step and starting a family here in Utah.
SHAUNA LAKE: What are some ways that you kind of decompress?
KYLE BECKERMAN: Well living in the great state of Utah, fly-fishing is one of the things I really like to do to get away, and I think just getting out into the mountains, on a river, it really relaxes me. It just kind of takes me away because a lot of times playing these games over and over again it gets stressful. I mean you have a lot of people who are rooting for you to win and they expect you to win. So it’s kind of just a time to really calm down and get rid of the stress.
SHAUNA LAKE: Were you scared at all when you heard you were coming to Utah? Did you have reservations?
KYLE BECKERMAN: I did, I did at first. One, the team wasn’t doing so good; and two, I didn’t know much about it. You hear, oh it’s no fun, this and that, but I was excited. Soccer brought me here and so that started it. And then I fell in love with the state. And I fell in love with the city. And I see myself living here forever.
SHAUNA LAKE: You do?
KYLE BECKERMAN: I do.
SHAUNA LAKE: And so it feels like home now?
KYLE BECKERMAN: It does, yeah, absolutely.
SHAUNA LAKE: When was the last time that you cried?
KYLE BECKERMAN: It might have, I don’t know, 2009 maybe after we won. It was the first time I had cried of happiness and hopefully I’ll do it again.
SHAUNA LAKE: I think you will.
KYLE BECKERMAN: Okay good.
SHAUNA LAKE: Hey it’s been so nice to get to know you…
KYLE BECKERMAN: It’s been a blast, thank you.
SHAUNA LAKE: Get to know you “Person 2 Person.”
KYLE BECKERMAN: Anytime, thanks.
