Riot Police Break Teacher Strike in Mexico
(KUTV) Anti-riot police moved into Mexico City on Friday to remove striking teachers.
Police used water cannons and tear gas to clear the area. Thousands of teachers started a sit-in three weeks ago. They had been ordered to leave ahead of this weekend’s Independence Day celebrations, and most did. But several hundred stayed behind.
The teachers are protesting an education reform bill signed this week by President Enrique Peña Nieto. It requires mandatory performance evaluations, which the teachers say violates their labor rights.
