(KUTV) Utah Woolen Mills, in downtown Salt Lake City, has been around for more than 100 years. In that time, they've sold a lot of ties but President B.J. Stringham will tell you, ties don't sell because of any practical purpose.

In fact, ties can be downright uncomfortable, especially on a hot day.

It raised a good question from a 2News viewer who reached out on KUTV.com writing, "Why is a tie so renowned as a standard in dress code for business and religious meetings?"

The answer, according various internet sources including Tie-a-Tie.net, goes back to 17th century France. Soldiers donned short neckties to help them identify one another on the battlefield and also keep their shirts closed.

King Louis XIII liked the look so much he made the accessories mandatory at royal events.

Over time, the tie became a must have clothing accessory. Stringham says, ties remain a common staple in a man's closet.

"Whatever the history of the tie is, what it denotes now is that you are serious about what you do," he said.
