After terrifying ski lift video goes viral; could it happen in Utah?
(KUTV) - By now you’ve probably seen the terrifying footage out of the Republic of Georgia, of a chairlift taking on a life of its own.
It starts rolling backward, flinging people off it as others jumped for safety.
We spoke with Brian Allen, an engineer with UDOT.
He says multiple things would have had to go wrong for that malfunction to happen.
He tells us there is actually a whole committee dedicated to setting safety standards for ski lifts here in Utah.
That committee is known as the Passenger Ropeway Safety Committee.
They also enforce those standards at the ski resorts around the state.
We’re told that in the event of a rollback, the brakes on our chairlifts should stop things automatically.
If by chance that fails, there is always an operator equipped with at least 2 “stop” buttons that will cut power immediately if pushed.
