One confirmed dead, massive police response to shots fired at U of U campus

UPDATE: Police named a potential suspect in the shooting as Austin Boutain, 24. He should be considered armed and dangerous police said. University police requested the public to call 801-585-2677 or 911 with any information.

(KUTV) 2News confirmed with Salt Lake City police that one person is confirmed dead, shot near the University of Utah campus. Police from agencies around the Wasatch Front responded as the university's alert of "shots fired."

"if you are in this area, please stay where you are," said a Salt Lake City Police Department's Sgt. Brandon Shearer said. He asked that anybody who sees anything or anybody that is out of place to please contact police immediately.

Shearer said the shooting happened at or near the gate of the canyon, believed to be Red Butte Canyon, immediately above Red Butte Gardens. He said the person who was shot and killed was in a vehicle.

"If you want to stay safe, please shelter in place," Shearer said more than an hour after the shooting. He said police are following up on every bit of information.

He said police are still looking for a shooter, but declined to call it an active shooter situation at a press conference around 11 p.m. The man police are looking for has a tear drop and cross tattoo on his face and is an adult white male. He is said to be wearing black clothing and may be driving a dark green pick-up truck with Colorado plates.

A campus "shots fired" alert was issued after 9 p.m. for the University of Utah campus telling students and faculty to shelter in place. It read:

CAMPUS ALERT: Shots fired, Red Butte Canyon. Shelter in place.

The University of Utah hospital confirmed that it is on lockdown as are dorms at the school.

UTA said the TRAX red line will not proceed beyond beyond the Stadium Station due to police activity. Bus service to the university was also suspended.

U of U campus alert later issued a description of a person believed to be the shooter:

CAMPUS ALERT UPDATE: Suspect male, white adult, black clothing, beanie wtih cross, tear-drop tattoo on face. Could be in forest green pick-up. Colorado plates.
