(KUTV)- A bill that would rename 600 miles of scenic highway in Utah after President Donald Trump was pulled by its sponsor Wednesday night.

Rep. Mike Noel of Kanab says he could have pressed the bill, but was tired of the calls, threats, and messages he has been receiving from across the country.

Noel says he has gotten as many as 8,000 emails from angry people across the nation, castigating him for bringing up the idea. “It's enough, enough controversy, enough derogatory statements, vile statements,” Noel said.

Noel spent much of the afternoon trying to whip up the votes. He says he managed to get 35 commitments but says it wasn’t enough and says, more importantly, messages like this one from a man in Raleigh, North Carolina, prompted him to pull the bill:

Hey Mike I got an idea for what you could name that road, how ‘bout you name it, ‘Mike Noel would suck Trump’s and Putin’s d**k. To name a f**ing highway to get the attention, you f**king loser, piece of sh*t.’
