DPS helicopter stumbles across stranded family in distress on Escalante river
(KUTV) A helicopter crew from the Utah Department of Public Safety rescued a family while on an unrelated search for a missing kayaker in Southern Utah.
The family, including two teenage daughters, became stranded along the river after their boats crashed into boulders in high water after a storm, according to a DPS news release.
Unaware of the family’s situation, the DPS helicopter was flying along the river while looking for a kayaker who had been reported missing.
While searching, the helicopter crew spotted the family who was in “obvious distress.” The crew landed and contacted the family.
The family was taken to the Escalante Airport and the original kayaker was reported to have returned to his camp safely.
The Department of Public Safety crew is going to talk to the media Monday afternoon and provide more information about the rescue.
