(KUTV) Twenty-five homes were evacuated in Alpine as fire crews battled a fire caused by target shooting that has burned more than 500 acres.

The Water Tower fire started around 8:00 p.m. Saturday while people were target shooting in the area, according to Lone Peak Battalion Chief Danny Campbell.

Authorities said Sunday morning they evacuated 25 homes in the Bald Mountain area as a precaution. Those evacuated could meet with the Red Cross at Alpine City Hall, officials said. The evacuation order was later lifted.

The fire is reportedly in the same place as a fire that started six years ago, Campbell said.

Fire authorities asked people to avoid the area so they can fight the blaze without having to push people away.

Campbell says there was no word on whether the people who started the fire will face charges.
