(KUTV) A man is dead after falling while rock climbing in Big Cottonwood Canyon Thursday night.

Matt Hearn, 26, was rock climbing with his girlfriend near Storm Mountain around 8 p.m. Thursday night, according to the Unified Police Department. He was descending when his equipment failed and he fell 100 feet downward into a bed of rocks.

Police said he was not wearing a helmet, and that witnesses tried to help but his head trauma was too severe.

Hearn was a marketing consultant at KUTV.

Kent Crawford, the general manager at KUTV, released the following statement following Hearn's death:

It is with great sadness that we report the tragic loss of one of our fantastic co workers, Matt Hearn, in a climbing accident in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Matt has worked for station as a Marketing Consultant for the last three years and did an outstanding job on behalf of the station and of all of his clients.

Matt lived life to the fullest and gave 100% in everything he did. He had a great zest for life.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and close friends at this difficult time.

Matt will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
