(KUTV) The man police believe is responsible for shooting an elderly couple in a Utah trailer park may have been killed by return fire, according to the Rich County Sheriff's Office.

The release said officers arrived at a call and found the man dead inside a vehicle that had crashed into the side of a trailer home near Garden City, Utah, southwest of Bear Lake. Inside of the trailer home police found an elderly couple, with gunshot wounds.

Police said investigators believe that during the attack, as gunfire was exchanged, the suspect was shot and killed. A preliminary investigation, according to police, indicates the couple shot back in self defense.

According to police, they are investigating why the man who died was targeting the elderly couple.

Police were originally called to the area with reports of a suicidal man shooting into a home.

Police said several agencies were called to assist in the investigation with Rich County.
