(KUTV) — Megaplex Theaters have backed out of an agreement to host the survivors of a school shooting in Florida a day after it was announced.

The March For Our Lives event was scheduled for Saturday night at the theater chain's South Jordan location at The District.

"Unfortunately, the Megaplex Theater has made the decision to cancel our event this Saturday night. We are heartbroken and blindsided by this turn of events, and even more so by the inappropriate behavior and intimidation tactics by outside groups that led to these circumstances," March For Our Lives SLC said on its Facebook page.

Larry H. Miller Sports & Entertainment released the following statement:

"We support important and respectful dialogue on any issue that impacts our community. When this event was initially booked, the full context wasn’t fully understood and now it appears to be escalating into a potentially contentious situation where additional security will be required.

After careful consideration, we have decided to cancel the event at Megaplex because our venues are focused on providing a safe, world-class movie experience for our guests, which include families and children. We are refunding all deposits and will assist in helping the organizer find an appropriate location for this event."

In the Facebook comments the March For Our Lives SLC group made the following comment:

"We have a backup venue already in mind, but are waiting for direction from the national team on how they want to proceed. There are several factors that have impacted our venue choice, including the desire to hold the event in Congressional District 4 in order to better engage with constituents of Rep. Mia Love."

Sixteen hours before the cancellation, the group announced it was sold out of its general admission tickets but said it would convert any leftover student tickets to general tickets and open them for sale.

Previously the event was planned for Salt Lake Community College and then moved to the Megaplex location.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported that the event would be followed by the Utah Gun Exchange which has taken its military-style vehicle to other locations where the Florida students are appearing.
