(KUTV) October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and in Utah 1 in 3 women experience domestic abuse or intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

For men, that number isn’t too far off, 1 in 6 men are victims in domestic violence and the number of cases are growing because more and more men are feeling comfortable about opening up about their experiences.

NATIONAL STATS:

(National Coalition Against Domestic Violence)

  • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner.
  • On a typical day, domestic violence hotlines receive approximately 21,000 calls, approximately 15 calls every minute.
  • Intimate partner violence accounts for 15 percent of all violent crime.
  • Having a gun in the home increases the risk of homicide by at least 500 percent

UTAH STATS:

  • 1 in 3 women in Utah will experience domestic violence at some point.
  • Every year approximately 80 Utah children witness the murder or attempted murder of their mother.
