Police investigate thefts from Utah County: “He’s got to know there are security cameras"
(KUTV) – Authorities in Utah County are searching for a suspect accused of stealing from staff at least one, and possibly more, hospitals.
Orem Police released a photo of the suspect to 2News Monday evening. According to police, the man in the photo went to Timpanogos Hospital in Orem Saturday evening and stole a nurse’s backpack from the nurse station.
Police say the thief struck when the nurses were busy during shift change. A surveillance picture shows the suspect wearing medical scrubs, which officers think may have been in an attempt to blend in with staff.
“We kind of believe it’s probably somebody who had them from a previous job and just decided that this was what he wanted to do, or purchased them for this purpose to go in and commit crimes,” Lt. Craig Martinez said.
The thief made off with several hundred dollars’ worth of items from the nurse’s bag. Detectives are now investigating if the Orem case is linked with thefts from other hospitals in the region.
“It’s kind of unheard of, we don’t get a lot of hospital type thefts,” Martinez said.
The victim in the case posted the picture to Facebook and her post has been shared more than 4,000 times.
2News spoke with the victim over Facebook messenger and she indicated she had been contacted by hospital security at other hospitals regarding similar thefts.
Provo Police confirmed to 2News that their detectives are looking at a possible connection between a recent theft at Utah Valley Hospital and the suspect from Timpanogos Hospital.
Orem Police hope someone recognizes the man and can provide detectives with his identity. Orem Police can be reached at 801-229-7070.
“He’s got to know there are security cameras there, he’s got to know there’s security there, there’s people watching,” Martinez said. “There’s a good can somebody can ID this guy.”
