Power couple pens songs for the stars while enjoying life in Utah

(KUTV) Do the names Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, or Florida Georgia line sound familiar? Even if you're not a fan of country music, you know some of the big names.

And you've heard the songs, but you've probably never heard of their writers.

"We're something of the unsung heroes, our songs are played millions of times on the radio and very rarely does anyone know who we are, I promise you I never get stopped in the grocery store," said Monty Powell.

Monty and Anna are the brains behind more than 50 million albums sold by artists like Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, Darius Rucker, Tim McGraw and many more.

The couple met in Nashville in their early 20s, married and began songwriting together.{ } Now decades later, they say it was never an overnight success, but rather, steady career growth that somehow brought them to the Beehive State.

“A few years ago we wanted a place out west and we took a little excursion one afternoon in this valley, skied Snowbasin, looked around and had a real estate agent that afternoon. it was a done deal for us,” Monty said.

“I feel like Utah chose us,” Anna added.

Now they invite famous friends to their cozy cabin home in the hills of Huntsville.

The couple realized early on the need to build a recording studio in their new home, not only to make their own personal albums, but to have a place where others could come to create.

“We've built this world class facility so you don't give up anything technologically or creatively to come here and work,” Monty said.

Monty has been writing songs with keith urban for more than 20 years.
The songwriting duo says they can usually tell when they've penned a hit.

“There have been times when I've gotten up from writing and someone asks how it went and i say, ‘I just wrote a number one song,” Monty said.

Both freely admit they cannot remember a time when they took time off from "working" and say they continue to enjoy making music together.

Despite working with the biggest names in the industry, the couple has high hopes for finding a hidden gem right here in Utah.

“I'd be interested in finding someone from this area and helping them all the way to the finish line. It would be really cool for the region and it would validate us moving out here.”
