Salt Lake City is almost as hipster as it gets, ranking third in the world
(KUTV) — Utah visitors and residents may not be aware — or maybe they are —but Salt Lake City is one of the trendiest, most hipster-friendly cities in the world, at least according to The International Hipster Index.
MoveHub.com took five data points into account, improving it says on last year's index, to rank cities:
- vegan eateries
- coffee shops
- tattoo studios
- vintage boutiques
- record stores
Those numbers are scored per 100,000 and from that score, Salt Lake City ranks right behind Portland, Oregon that is just behind -- one-thousandth of a point behind -- Brighton and Hove in the United Kingdom. And, surprisingly, Salt Lake is a lot closer to the top two spots than number four Seattle is to Utah's capital city. Rounding out the top five was Lisbon, Portugal. It might feel strange to locals to learn that their city is cooler than Lisbon, For Lauderdale, Miami or Helsinki, but that is what the top 10 list below says.
The top ten are:
- Brighton and Hove — 8.1632
- Portland — 8.1631
- Salt Lake City — 7.8527
- Seattle — 7.0290
- Lisbon — 6.9437
- Fort Lauderdale — 6.8577
- Miami — 6.8369
- Orlando — 6.8288
- Helsinki — 6.7052
- Spokane — 6.6950
"The Utah capital excels in every category, probably providing the second most ‘complete’ hipster experience after Portland," Movehub.com wrote.
The results aren't a surprise to the Boston Globe that called SLC "America's super gay, super cool hipster haven."
For those who aren't hip to hipsters, MoveHub even offered a definition:
Hipsters are a subculture of 20- to 30-somethings who position themselves as non-mainstream pioneers; free-thinkers and non-conformist conformists. From the inside this looks like independent thought, progressive politics, sustainable food, thrift store bargains, delicious local beer, and groups of ardent individuals looking exactly like each other. From the outside peering in it tends to resemble gentrification, sickly vegan dishes, and groups of ardent individuals looking exactly like each other.
Tattoos were a part of so many American cities showing up on the list. According to Business Insider, Salt Lake has the fifth highest density of tattoo parlors in the world at 24 per 100,000 people. We also hold an international tattoo convention.
