Sen. Hatch speaks on school safety legislation
(KUTV) — Senator Orrin Hatch hosted a press conference on the STOP School Violence Act, alongside Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Steve Daines (R-MT), Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Dan Sullivan (R-AK).
The bill has 35 cosponsors, which includes 15 Democrats.
Kyle Kashuv, a student at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, joined the senators on stage, as well as the father of Parkland student Alaina Petty, who was tragically killed in the recent Parkland high school shooting.
“The STOP School Violence Act directly addresses flaws in the system that failed to prevent violence in school,” Hatch said in a press release. “It’s a historic investment of a billion dollars in school safety infrastructure, prevention training for the entire school ecosystem, the formation of crisis intervention teams with mental health professionals, and better coordination between schools and law enforcement.”
