Susan G. Komen office to close its doors in Utah
(KUTV) - One of the largest breast cancer foundations in the world is closing its doors in Utah.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation sent letters to its supporters Friday announcing it will keep its Utah Affiliate office open through January and then wind down its operations.
Fundraising and mission program responsibilities will be transferred to the national organization in Dallas, Texas, the letter stated.
"Over the past several months and after a thorough analysis of our long-term financial status, our board and staff researched several options, including merging with another affiliate or closing the affiliate and shifting operations to national," the letter stated that was signed by the Komen Utah Board of Directors. "Despite a successful, fun and well-attended gala last November, the financial forecast for the next two years does not demonstrate sustainability ... The board’s vote was not an easy decision, but a necessary one at this time."
The foundation also closed its offices in central Florida and canceled its annual February race. Additionally, the Arizona chapter of the foundation was closed in 2017 citing declining participation and competition resulting from increased run-walk races sponsored by other charities for fundraising purposes.
"Across the country, National has been working to improve efficiency in operations by streamlining the Affiliate network, primarily through merging of neighboring affiliates that serve the same region and can operate stronger together," the letter stated. "For us in Utah, we need to work with National to explore a new model for geographically-distant affiliates like ours that need additional support. This concept would enable us to serve the Utah communities more efficiently by pooling resources and providing the possibility of expanding regionally in the future."
Organizations slated for grants are still going to receive their full funding as planned through March 31, which includes services of screenings, patient navigation, diagnostic service, and other support services.
