(KUTV)A judge has accepted a teen’s guilty plea for aggravated murder of a Cache County, Utah, girl.
Colter Peterson, 16, was accused or robbing and trying to kill Deserae Turner, 14, in February 2017.
Turner was shot on the afternoon of Feb. 16 in the back of the head and left for dead in a canal in the small town of Smithfield, Utah, just north of Logan in Cache County.
He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. He will be sentenced Jan. 28.
Deserae's family said in a statement:
Today was a step towards justice for Deserae. We are grateful for a team of men and women who have worked and continue to work tirelessly for our family. Our daughter continues to struggle. She works every day to gain as much quality of life as she can, but her life will never be the same.
We hear too often about acts of senseless violence, innocent victims whose lives and dreams are shattered. It is not ok, we must not be complacent as we hear about these horrible acts. Our church leaders have often counseled us to care for one another. Please, care for your neighbors both near and far. The whole world has become our neighbor and for that we are very grateful. We continue to feel their prayers, their kindness, their love. Our lives have been forever changed by this tragedy, but the caring of so many have helped us as Deserae and our family continue to heal.
A GoFundMe account has been created to support Turner through her injuries, including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Hemianopsia (1/2 vision), and Hemiplegia (left side weakness/paralysis).
The campaign is currently at $55,058 with a goal of $75,000.
