Tire fires in polygamist towns set by 'hooligans' a concern for residents
(KUTV) For years fire officials in the polygamist cities of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona, have been fighting a battle against what's believed to be a group of FLDS children who are lighting piles of rubber tires in the middle of community roads.
Colorado City/Hildale Fire Chief Kevin Barlow said they've received multiple calls a year concerning this issue, more this year so far.
Numbers according to Colorado City/Hildale Fire Dept.:
- 2015 - 8 tire fires
- 2016 - 7 tire fires
- 2017 - 8 tire fires so far the last 4 months
The southern Utah news team witnessed one of these fires recently. This time it was lit on a main highway, Highway 59 and it stopped traffic for about 30 minutes until fire crews could clear the scene.
This issue has been going so long that it's causing some concern for residents in the towns.
