SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man convicted of killing a 20-year-old man with his pickup truck in 1987 has been released after nearly 30 years in prison.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports 49-year-old Frank Gene Powell waked out of a state prison in Draper on Tuesday after the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole granted him parole in late November.

Powell was originally charged with second-degree murder and took a plea deal for manslaughter in 1988 for the death of Glen Candland. He later withdrew that plea and was granted a new trial.

Powell was convicted of the original murder charge in 1992, and he was sentenced to five years to life.

Powell told the parole board that prison had reformed him and his former macho attitude and drinking had contributed to Candland's death.
